Collectives are a response to adversity. A crisis like war, famine, disease are adversaries so people might group together to overcome that adversary but if it is perceived as being too great then people may decide to go their own way. For example if a person is a farmer in a collective during a famine and they know there is simply not enough food to go around then they may very well decide to feed themselves and their family first thus putting themselves before the collective. Collectives become more authoritarian during a crisis to prevent people from jumping ship.
