When he talks about his food show and the people who talked to him afterwards about how it changed their lives it brings me back to this idea that I have that comedy is almost a replacement for religion. Here's the parallels. You have a collection of people who all congregate together to listen to a single person talking to them about things that affect their lives or shared experiences. There has to be some truth to what comedian says and that truth has to be revealed. When this truth is revealed there is an uplifting feeling of joy that is so great the audience has a physical reaction and comes away much happier. They will think about what they were told, perhaps change their behaviour, tell other people and suggest they also watch the comedian. The overall framework appears the same as people going to a church and listening to a sermon given by a priest about things in life, having a sing and feeling enlightened and joyful after and perhaps changing their behaviour.
