I am of English, Irish, Welsh, Scottish, and probably Dutch descent. As well as who knows what else. going back who knows how far. But I just call myself an American.

Man, your brain must hurt!

You say "toe-mah-toe" and I say "tah-may-toe".
1
Oh that's right, there's a Cornish language. I had forgotten that.

Well ... Massachusetts = Land of Great Hills or Many Hills. Not necessarily The Blue Hills just south/sw of Boston, just north of rt 128/I-95 by Canton. As you go west, thru Mass, it gets more hilly.
1
Do not dare! The "you" is implied. Particularly since you would probably be pointing your finger at the person.

I wonder who the greatest "mutt" of a person is. The one with the most number of different ethnicities mixed into him or her. I suppose one day, there will only be one people.
1
How about English slang words and how there are different ones in England versus in America?
1
Oh no!! Not you again!?
1
Again, they mean the same thing.

@MrJackOfAllTraits I could care less, if anything, could be construed as a stronger statement than I couldn't care less. I could care less might mean you are caring less than less or it might mean you're not caring less than less. But I couldn't care less is stating that you could not care any less than less. But in reality and usage they mean the same thing. So take a chill pill already.

It's like arguing over the difference between saying "fat chance" and "slim chance". They mean the same thing!! A quirk in our English language. So get over it. "there are two chances of me ever getting that job, fat and slim".

@localbod "we" Brits.

@joeharris3878 wait, wait!! I cant see what you wrote.

I read a very thorough book on Bolivar the guy who traveled around South America and for whom the country of Bolivia is named. In this book they talked about all the prejudices throughout South America and all the different names they have for all the different mix of people. If you were Spanish born in Spain and came to live in Venezuela you were called one thing, but if you were Spanish and born in Venezuela you were called something different. It is really quite unbelievable.
1
@nikitasoloviev3114 or that landlocked Bolivia maintained a Navy, but now I think they have been granted a corridor to the ocean.
1
@lucaslourenco8918 I don't think he said he was in the Navy and went to Switzerland. I think that what the person typed got him thinking about what he commented.
1
@nikitasoloviev3114 why is the Swiss guard at the Vatican?
1
I think one of the main problems with this is that these are expressions you've never seen written. Or you hear them from someone speaking in a slight accent or muffled voice and not enunciating the words clearly. Also from just plain laziness.
1
It just goes to show you that English is a mutt language.
1
OMG!! LOL!!
1
How did all these different people ever communicate with each other way back in the olden days? Just the other day I learned that China has 302 different languages and dialects. I thought maybe 12.
1
Some English guy is going to explain our 50 state names. This is going to be funny.
1
