  1. I had a German aunt who was a World War II bride, and as I recall she was horrified at summer cookouts when we eat corn on the cob. She couldn't understand that because in Germany they fed corn to pigs and such.

  6. A lot of these words, including "kitch" and "schmutz", I have never seen nor heard before. I'm in Boston, had a German aunt (WWII bride) and half German cousins. What did my uncle always call her? I'm trying to remember. Something like "schutzy". I don't know.

  11.  @SkyKid002  I suppose they do, as well as English. I remember as a kid going through Wales with my parents, and people were speaking Welsh. Then one time up in Edinburgh some street musician guy was speaking Scottish. Im part Irish living in Boston. I learned some Gaelic phrases. I guess I was in an autozone store one time, talking with another customer, local American, waiting to check out. I said some Gaelic phrase I knew, and the guy knew what I said and said something back in Gaelic. So even local Irish Americans in Boston speak Gaelic.

  12.  @SkyKid002  ahhhh NO! I don't think so, Spanish and Portuguese are totally different languages. Portuguese is not one of the romance languages like Spanish, Italian, French.

  13.  @SkyKid002  I dunno. I don't speak Spanish or Portuguese but I've heard a lot of Spanish being spoken my entire life, and where I live I'm surrounded by Brazilians who speak Portuguese all the time. The 2 languages don't sound anything alike.

  18. I took french in school but can't speak it. I don't have an ear for languages. When I got older I tried learning some japanese. I don't speak any spanish even though I'm surrounded by spanish speaking people. I don't think any of my brothers or sisters speak any foreign language either. My father spoke french. His father was an attorney who spoke a lot of languages. I saw his report card in colleges. He got all A's in latin, greek, classical greek, french, spanish, german. My Uncle speaks German cause he got a World War II German war bride. He ended up a colonel in the army reserves. So 3 cousins speak german.. My niece speak spanish. One time, a long time ago, I knew this rich guy from brazil. I saw him go in and out of six different languages in like two minutes. Standing their talking to different people. I think it was english, portuguese, spanish, french, german. That's five, hummm??? Maybe italian also. I just stood there, I was flabberghasted. Oh is that a german word? I know of these 3 sisters. I had spoken with the oldest one extensively online a number of years ago.. They are british and german but they sound like americans. They grew up living in many different countries. They speak several different languages. English, German, Russian, Ukrainian, slovak, polish, and some others. They never went to school, they were home schooled by their parents.

  19. My grandfather was an attorney for John Hancock life insurance company in Boston. He never drove a car. He walked from his house, in suburb, all the way down to the train station. take a train to Boston and then back again. His wife, my irish grandmother, did not drive either. She probably walked down to the market all the time to buy food. My other grandmother, my mother's mother, on the other hand drove a van across the country.
