At 100 microwatt = 10,000 to produce 1 Watt.@soundtrancecloud5101
45
@orchdork775 micro is a millionth, so a 3 Watt controller needs 3,000,000 microwatts, if the battery is producing 100 microwatts, the equation is just 3,000,000÷100=30,000. Simple as dollars to cents.

Yes, if the costings Musk offers to go to Mars are remotely accurate, the cost of going to the moon would make mass tourism there possible. That could support a permanent lunar population in the millions. That would grow into a diverse space focused economy that could push out into the solar system.
7
@dianapennepacker6854 the moon happens before colonies because it's already a place with the resources to do other stuff like build colonies.
6
@orionx79 and you know the effects of intermediate levels of gravity how?
6
@Onceayoungidiot the work Haidt has done in this area is substantial, unless there is something offered more detailed that Sabine's fly-over strafing, I'm not convinced he's wrong.
6
@touristguy87 "word-salad . . . [300 word word-salad]."
5
@CollinCusce specifically, what do you think she has to learn?
5
Why is a theoretical physicist speaking about democracy more gold than, for example, a structural engineer or an organic chemist talking about it?
5
@CollinCusce she didn't cover why the electoral college exists, that's not evidence that she doesn't know why it exists. Most forms of gerrymandering are legal in the US. She covered that Brazil has a proportional voting system (for the chamber of deputies). She didn't go deeper into the Brazilian political system than that, which is no surprise. The Brazilian political system wasn't the subject of the video.
5
@eddie5484 if you remember, at the end of Heinlein's story, he explained how the moon was a jump off point to the rest of the solar system.
5
@sebastianbauer4768 what colony on Earth has ever been economically independent??
5
@dublinus extermination of peoples and genocide had been regular occurrences long before intercontinental colonization.
4
Why?
4
@SabineHossenfelder excellent video, thank you. It's no surprise the criticisms in the comments lack any substance.
3
As Sabine doesn't offer exactly what evidence there is that Haidt misinterpreted the studies he cites (just other people's claims without specifics). I'm putting less weight in her flyover strafing than in Haidt's extensive research.
3
MrWizardGG "gerrymandering is not illegal" Isn't that what I said?
3
@sdaniel9129 why would you need it to have an atmosphere to settle it?
3
Sabine's video has been targeted by at least half a dozen Marxist YouTubers. Their followers are each putting in many comments. If you actually examine the criticisms there's no substance, if you ask them to be specific as to why Sabine is wrong, or how capitalism fails, they run away.
3
@Blueshirt38 why would anyone place any confidence in a costing from NASA?
2
It's a Marxist pile-on, fuelled by Marxist YouTubers.
2
@nefaristo "disregarding your own judgment" is not critical thinking. To "disregard" means to not give consideration to. Critical thinking is giving consideration to your preferred biases and conclusions and questioning them through objective analysis.
2
@touristguy87 disregard has a straightforward meaning: "The action or state of paying no attention to something." If you select an option after considering the possible alternatives, you have not disregarded those alternatives.
2
So, what you're saying is that you're under the impression that most teenagers are homeless.
2
@Haruchemy so social media is making you more comfortable as a homeless person.
2
People seem to think that colonialism was a creation of the European Powers. In reality, it's been the norm for intertribal conflict for many thousands of years.
2
@Pulo747 when the colonial powers left Africa, the power vacuum that was left ignited intertribal conflicts that caused massive death and destruction and a lowering of the levels of wealth that had existed.
2
@Thomas-gk42 I've had a quick look at the first couple of pages. It looks like it's also doing the goodies vs. baddies thing, with the goodies being colonialism. My view is that there are several aspects of European societies that brought about the wealth and success of those societies compared to other cultures and societies around the world. Those aspects are not colonialism, but resulted in the wealth and technology that made colonialism possible. I'm referring to capitalism and mechanisms of stable governance. It was these aspects that were accepted and adopted by countries that were successful post colonialism, and rejected by countries that were unsuccessful post colonialism, the latter often, in rejecting the colonial powers, also rejecting, those successful systems, instead turning to things like Marxism and authoritarianism.

As half of emissions are removed by carbon sinks, achieving net zero would result in atmospheric CO2 levels falling (initially) at the rate that they are currently rising.
2
@ekaterinaponizovskayadevin2812 China has had a lot of economic success since Deng Xiaoping implemented his capitalist reform, but since then we've seen how those in control of an authoritarian regime can't keep their fingers out of the pie and exploit their power over the economy, Chinese capitalism has become a tool of those in power rather than a force to improve the lives of the common people. The success of the West rests on a tripod of three freedoms that give power to the common people: free speech, economic freedom, and freedom to vote for the political leadership.

Running from a bear is more dangerous than holding your ground, same with a dog. Bears and dogs can run faster than you, they chase down their prey.
2
@SaHaRaSquad "prove" You don't really understand how science works do you.
2
They established the electoral college to avoid mob rule. The strategy failed.
1
The technology of the Soviet Union was always backwards compared to the west, China's economic success is due to China adopting capitalism.
1
@umbraemilitos I checked our those reaction videos, they're, literally, all by Marxists, Marxists, by definition, don't understand economics, Marxism is an ideology, not an economic system.
1
@touristguy87 Webster's: "to pay no attention to or treat something as unworthy of notice or regard."
1
Theists like to portray atheism as a belief in a lack of a God or God's, most atheists see it as a lack of belief in a God or God's. The latter being the historically more correct definition.
1
Ancient Greece was not a democracy, given that the majority of people never had the right to vote.
1
The guy you reference is not an economist, quite the opposite, he's a Marxist. Marxism is an ideology that tried economics and failed.
1
She gave a sound explanation of capitalism, it's the Marxists that failed spectacularly at basic economics.
1
@oldmanlearningguitar446 "America is not a democracy, it's a Republic" is a claim made by several right wing commentators in the US. The reason eludes me, but I suspect it's some form of logic about the Democrats being wrong as usual.
1
@MinesAGuinness your people were killing each other in vast numbers in intertribal wars over territory long before European arrival.
1
@Pulo747 colonialism introduced new technologies that have increased wealth and life expectancy around the globe. So colonialism equals good? More like colonialism is the reality of technological disparities, if the technologies that enabled intercontinental colonialism had been developed in Indonesia instead of Europe, it would have been the Indonesians who were the colonists.
1
@Pulo747 colonialism, in terms of the surrender of sovereignty to a foreign country, didn't occur in New Zealand until 1840. The transfer of European technology to the Maori occurred earlier. The technology the Maori chose to import most was muskets. The Musket Wars devastated the Maori population in intertribal warfare. Those wars ended when sovereignty over New Zealand was surrendered to the British in 1840. The technology itself, even without colonialism, is a disruption that can cause massive conflict.
1
@Pulo747 you're trying to have your cake and eat it too. If you introduce technology without colonialism, you get to guns as well as the plows. If you have colonialism, you get the suppression of local intertribal conflicts with the introduction of colonial power. It's not about goodies and baddies. It's delusional to judge the interactions of cultures of centuries ago by the culture that you've been brought up in. I'm not going to make such self-serving judgements, I'm not going to go around condemning the Maori people or people of PNG of centuries ago because they practiced cannibalism, I don't expect them to live by my standards.
1
@Pulo747 you're judging past cultures by your preferred standards. Do you condemn the cannibalism of Maori or people of Papua who lived centuries ago? You understand you can't expect them to have lived by your standards?
1
And yet the capitalist west gets better and better while the Marxist East collapsed.
1
@anomaly_echelon7994 why are they correlated? The assumption is that the cause of the correlation is genetic, but what if it's environmental?
1
@hydewhyte4364 Africans and their descendents colonized the world without first sorting out all the issues in Africa.
1
@lobotomizedamericans Soviet propaganda was effective . . . right up until Soviet economics failed . . . 30 years ago, please try to keep up.
