I see nothing of merit in the case she's trying to make, some jobs are great, some are unpleasant, some have higher rates of remuneration because there is a risk to the physical or mental health of those doing them. She drags in the argument that sometimes the women are exploited by pimps, but exploitation of workers can occur in many occupations, with prostitution it's often a result of prostitution being illegal.

You argue there was never a country called Palestine, do you realize that that can be said of most of the colonies of the European powers prior to those countries gaining independence? None of these countries: Kenya, Ghana, Malaysia, Brazil, Argentina, Chad, Nigeria, Peru, Iraq, India, Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, Uganda, Australia, New Zealand, the USA , and many more, existed as countries before gaining independence.

  13. Africa turned to socialism and the communist block because they were seen as the opposite of, and opposition to the colonial powers. Communism itself gained popularity in Russia and China because it was seen as the opposite of, and opposition to the imperialism of those in power. It takes at least a couple of generations for the people to get passed the fanaticism of the earlier generations. I think we're now seeing a transition in Africa towards and appreciation of democracy and market systems with Africans now seeing through the faults in the alternatives.

  16. @liammccann8763  human nature is the ultimate determination of morality. If humans were not social animals, we wouldn't have social morality. In terms of social morality, it changes as society changes. In times where strong social cohesion is advantageous, moral codes that promote that cohesion are stronger, in times of wealth and security, such strict moral codes are less popular. Religions that can survive through hugely diverse times can do so because scripture is vast and can be interpreted to fit the needs of society. For example the acceptable views on sex out of wedlock held by Christian's today vs 1000 or 100 years ago.

  19. @someonesomeone25  if someone in power decided that religion was evil and harmful, so embarked on a policy of banning it and punishing people for holding and sharing their religious beliefs, they would have embarked on a moral cause. It's not hard to think of a couple of irreligious dictators who did exactly that.

She's just projecting her own hatred of the trade onto everyone involved, putting words into their mouths, claiming to speak for them with nothing but her own claims and her own interpretation of their positions. New Zealand legalized prostitution 20 years ago and as a result the conditions, independence and safety has improved greatly and they're arguably now the safest prostitutes in the world not being under threat from either criminal gangs or the legal system.

  24. @liammccann8763  humans have an hierarchical social structure. In ancient times those at the top have advantages in terms of survival and reproduction. Those at the bottom, both today and historically, have instinctively sort to disrupt the status quo, moving themselves to the top, I think any new way being promoted by those at the bottom can be seen in those terms. We see the same in cults today, though not so much about overthrowing the state, rather moving up within their own peer group.

The people living in the liberal Western democracies are the best educated, longest lived, and wealthiest people the Earth has ever seen. That wealth and security has led to a much lower need for the regimentation needed for survival in societies where survival is more difficult. Catholic countries are no exception to those changes towards more liberalism. Societies with stronger social rules are more resilient in the face of adversity, the ultimate example being the military.

  28.  @helenespaulding7562  theists will sometimes strawman atheists with claims along the lines you describe, and there are people who describe themselves as atheists who believe God/s don't exist, I happily point out to those people that their disbelief (as opposed to nonbelief) is an act of faith. The term "agnosticism" was coined by Thomas Huxley only about 160 years ago, while the concept of atheism is thousands of years old. I think it's fair to say that the introduction of "agnosticism", which is a different metric, has shifted the understanding of atheism in common parlance.

  39. @leetaipe  if you look at the start of the conflict, that happened around 1946, and was initiated by Jewish terrorist organizations like the Stern Gang. How easy it is to remember the bits of history that best suit us.

  42. @credomonster-zh7gc  I would summarize his argument against the liberal democratic system as humans are prone to buying into silly fads, which contributes to forms of mobbing. Undoubtedly this is true. So, does centralization of power mean those holding that centralized power aren't prone to those same human instincts? No, they're often the leaders of the mobs, and as unopposed leaders they are often far more destructive.

You might argue that parents instill beliefs that are damaging, but I will point to the horrors we've seen in the Soviet Union, Hitler's Germany and Mao's China of what can happen when the state gets to dictate what ideology the young are filled with.
