Indonesia did not bring colonialism to their politics. That's the difference.

@bibbr4137 We are against colonialism. But the government annexed Papua, Operation Trikora. Technically Papua was never part of Indonesia. The reason why the annexation is justified is because it is a Dutch colony. If it were British colony, Papua will never be part of Indonesia. "Dari Sabang sampai Merauke" was written in 1963. Before that it's "Dari barat ke timur". Operation Trikora has been concluded the year before, 1962. History is ugly, isn't it? We ourselves are the colonizers of Papua.

@Bro15263 If we had to draw a reference to modern events, it would have to be the referenda on Russian annexed Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, and Zaporizhia oblast today. Invade, subjugate the population, and have them vote (possibly) on gunpoint. Surely there won't be any rigged results right? Don't get me wrong. I am not supporting free Papua movement terrorists, nor do i support a Dutch colony on Indonesia's backyard. I hoped there is a positive and real development in Papua that render GPM obsolete. I am only questioning the Indonesian government's legality regarding the Papua issue.

@Bro15263 New York agreement put the Dutch under disadvantageous position. The US wants to repair relations with Indonesia in order to not let Indonesia fall to communism, the USSR is obviously against any Western colonialism. It is in the superpowers' interest that the Dutch should release control of West Papua to Indonesia. Well i guess in a way it is legitimate, if agreed by all sides. However the criticism on the Pepera 1969 vote remains valid. 1025 people selected by TNI to vote on the behalf of god knows how many indigenous Papuans? Does that sound sus?

@Bro15263 Fair point. I now think that the indigenous population, especially who lived deep and isolated really don't know what's best for them. Not being a racist, but I can't find better word to describe it.
