  1. The recoil pad did make difference. My uncle was in a unit* which received an issue of No.5 rifles for troop trials. Including some with standard stocks, without recoil pads. They were very uncomfortable to shoot and were returned to stores after a month or so. *6th Airborne Division. It was proposed that the No.5 become the standard rifle for British paratroopers and glider troops.
