If you're saying "The Chinese" as if the nation or somehow all Chinese agreed then that's misleading but this context is that some (not alllllllllll) but enough Chinese wanted opium that Chinese went looking for it from British merchant ships, bought it, brought it into China, created distribution networks so they could get lots of opium to the demand, the 'demand' is the Chinese who wanted to buy and use that opium. There was a point in time where smoking opium could be compared to cigarettes today, it was absolutely widespread in China, soldiers routinely smoked it, retired folks sat around smoking it. It was a 'national addiction' and the more opium Chinese could get, bring in and distribute the more and more it sold.
