Munchau is hardly a deep thinking interlocutor of European issues as he can’t really discuss anything without slinging political labels. He may be one of the best known English language writers on Germany — but that’s only a reflection of how indifferent the anglo-saxons are to Germany. In any event, in his many years of writing editorials for the FT, I didn’t read anything that was in anyway prescient or predictive of the situation that Germany is in today.

Precisely. Munchau is only out for bylines.

Dr Samantha Bailey (author of “Virus Mania”) is peerless.

Yanis is always interesting even when his arguments don’t convince. Free international flow of people is a fallacious concept to stand behind. Ideas are fascinating even if they bear little relation to reality. As he’s never worked in the private sector as it’s constituted today (despite his anecdote), his suggestions for change are conceptual only.

The fall of German industry from its top position in the near future is essential for world peace. Their economy needs to be reduced in size to, say, Poland or Croatia.

@danielbtwd not in the West. Capital punishment is reserved for those who express “verboten” opinion. Look at hr6696.

Gave provides some good basic information — particularly the point that it was the Europeans who elected to not renew long term contracts for energy. Those of us in project finance of course recognized the risk (this surprised Sayers). Nonetheless Gave’s mindset is still very Cold War — he is of the McCain school that the world is only material. So mind — intelligence, diligence, capability in science and engineering — account for very little in his factor system. So little value is assigned to instruction sets (software) and its future on new substrates (in other words, material science). He’s clearly not technology savvy and this accounts for the weakness of his presentation. Finally, with his focus on finance, he completely misses the hollowing out of American and European manufacturing. So he will be surprised as whether the US military will indeed be able to produce its vaunted weaponry.
