  5.  @kramrle  all other things being equal, of course a trade surplus is preferable to a trade deficit but there are other issues. With the reserve currency, the US abused the trade deficit, basically paying IOUs as it has the power to print unlimited dollars. Kind of like never paying cash (which was gold until 1971 when the US switched to IOUs.  I’m not sure what your last sentence means.
