  1. It wasn’t explained as well as it might have been. Obviously Trump is smart enough to realize that US debt is unsustainable and that drastic steps must be taken to avert an outright default. Acting like a bully seems to work with most of the world — only China is strong enough and in a position to call Trump’s bluff. If China hadn’t stood up, Trump’s gambit would have worked. So it was a kind of intelligent gamble.
