  2.  @kirotheavenger60  You just lost the argument suggesting it was a stug or hetzer. Anyone else see the issue with this claim? Let’s start with a question: how quickly can the turret of a stug or hetzer traverse. And of course it’s a trick question, as neither of those vehicles has a turret. (Nor would the vehicle be able to turn around to reorient its gun.) Maybe you should stick to games and leave history to the historians.

  3.  @ConvairDart106  We found out how ingrained racism still was/is. Better to know the truth. My mother, her parents, the family, spent WWII in an Arizona concentration camp. My aunt was born in that camp. I’ve encountered racism and I’ve seen it against black Americans, mexican American, and others. Despite all that, I was very surprised to see how extensive racism had remained over the last four years, when the racists stopped hiding it. But now we know it’s there in ways we didn’t before. Trump isn’t the first racist president, but he’s the first president since the Civil War to run as a racist with a racist platform. It’s important to remember that, and in the years to come, if we have friends that supported Trump, we need to ask them why they thought it was OK to support a racist. By the way, I’m a conservative. I’m an ex-Republican, because the racism in the GOP preceded Trump. He’s just the face of it now.

  4. ARMOR PIERCER Theres a long history between Mexico and the Philippines that goes back to the days after Spain conquered the land they would call New Spain (and later called Mexico). Spanish navigators discovered transpacific routes to the Philippines from Acapulco and back (because of the direction of prevailing winds the routes to the Philippines and back were different. Spain was mining an extraordinary amount of silver in Mexico, and China had a silver shortage. Twice a year, the “Manilla Galleon” took silver to China and came back to Acapulco with silks and all manner of valuable trade goods. This trade route from almost 500 years ago was really the first time trade could be said to be global. Some of the first “Chinese” to come to the Americas were actually Filipino sailors that jumped ship!

  7.  @LuvBorderCollies  On the whole, I agree, although the reality is not so clear cut. Yes, it was a blunder that led to great tragedy for both the U.S. and especially Vietnam. So here are two factors that muddy the waters, that I know of. Ho Chi Minh was educated in Paris, were he became a communist. This wasn’t a secret, even if the Viet Minh tended to downplay it—the V.M. identified as a nationalist organization, not a communist cause. It was a coalition independence movement. Second factor is the short period of British control before the French could return in force. The British were very short handed, and were also tasked with guarding Japanese POWs waiting to be repatriated to Japan. So the British armed the Japanese POWs and set them to work against their former allies, the Viet Minh. That was the betrayal that preceded the Haiphong Incident. But on the whole, we (the U.S.) fell short of our own ideals, we lost opportunities to help new allies achieve their independence, and thereby suffered and caused others to suffer.

  10. She’s making bank. My tamal vendor sells me tamales for 10 pesos each. That’s about 50¢. Her name is Conchita. Her sister sells bolillos and pan dulce. Their kids ring my doorbell or they shout up to my window (or I hear them down on the street when they reach the corner).

  11. Same in Los Angeles. In supermarket parking lots in the Mexican neighborhoods, people sell tamales y atole from the back of their cars. Of course, now that I’m in Mexico, I know tamaleros. My friend Conchita will shout up to my window or have one of her kids ring the doorbell when she passes my apartment. I generally like rajas con queso or verde con pollo, but I once had an incredible tamal of pollo, championes, and queso. The best tamal I’ve ever eaten. What’s your favorite?

Guanajuato and Querétaro are both beautiful states to come visit, especially if you’re tired of beach vacations.
