That’s not how ethics and morals are supposed to work. You act ethically and morally because it’s the right thing to do. Whether your adversary acts ethically/morally or not does not justify your own failure to live up to your own code.

Do they have another mechanism for releasing a cable?

Really good episode, Ryan.

@DogeickBateman That is incorrect. The Nazi war industry was a fair target in WWII. Please go ahead and explain why you think it wasn’t.

@nissimtrifonov5314 I’m going to use this reply to address both your comment and that of Dean Perkins. It’s simple. Revenge might be emotionally satisfying, but it is neither a sound military strategy nor is it moral. Specifically to Dean saying that I make my comment because I’m comfortable and away from danger, I think that Dean is also in a place of comfort and not currently threatened by war. I think the reason he makes his “argument”, is because I’m foreclosing on his revenge fantasies. Sorry, Dean. Doing the right thing often means doing something different from your emotional reaction. That’s why doing the right thing is sometimes harder than doing what comes naturally. The question here isn’t whether an action is understandable. The question is whether it is moral and ethical.

There’s a difference between saying, “I am willing to be martyred” and “I want to be martyred”. The first tells us that the person is willing to suffer deprivation, injury or death to advance their cause. The second tells us that the person is actively seeking death to advance their cause. Given the course of events, it’s pretty clear that the radical activists attacked the comandos to provoke a reaction in which they might be killed. It’s not Ryan missing the nuance of a word, it’s the speakers of the word using it in an unambiguous way.

Uh, yes we do, unless you’re ignoring pre-Colombian structures.

@DogeickBateman He probably thinks that when firemen respond to a fire, they are occupiers.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t base my ethics and principles on what people think about me or if people are watching me. I try to do the right thing whether I’m alone or not. For example, I don’t steal even if no one is watching. I try to act ethically and morally for reasons other than social benefit. If everyone labeled me a thief, I wouldn’t use that as a justification to steal. That’s the reasoning of a child that hasn’t developed morals beyond “getting caught is bad”.

Ultimately it’s irrelevant to anyone claiming to be the good guys, as Ryan pointed out. Good guys have standards to live up to. They should try to live up to those standards and not use an adversary’s lack of standards as an excuse for failing to live up to standards.

@Granox He’s against the death penalty unless there’s cannibalism afterwards.

He does in fact speak Arabic. The rest of your comment sounds like nonsense stereotyping. Do you also say that Jewish culture is tribal culture, based on respect and fear? Probably you don’t.

@HA-ml4sx there’s a difference between being willing to risk one’s life for a humanitarian cause, and seeking death by attacking someone who has the potential to kill you. The guy didn’t say he was willing to be a martyr, he said he WANTED to be a martyr. And then he attacked comandos.

@JoshuaRed-v4f Aaron would put everyone but fascists at the “Democratic table”, including moderate Republicans and non-fascist conservatives Republicans. George frikkin’ Bush is supposed to sit at the “Democratic table”. And maybe he’s right. There are two tables. But the democratic table doesn’t represent the Democratic Party. It represents those who believe in democracy. And his table represents those that wish to overthrow democracy. I’m a conservative and a former republican. I’d be honored to share a table with anyone who is pro-democracy, even Democrats.

Ukraine hasn’t entered Russian territory to destroy monuments. Only a developmentally disabled child would make the false comparison you just did.
