  1. This is the first conflict where I’ve heard of it. But as far back as the first Iraq war, I remember the concept being described as a spear, with combat troops being the point of the spear and all the support being the spear shaft that allows the point to be used effectively. Something that changed between WWII and Vietnam was the increased use of private contractors to perform a lot of support duties, which might distort the numbers when you compare operations in different wars.
