@logandance4644 Part of the problem is that some of us armchair experts think we know what CAS means, but we really don’t. CAS means delivering boom boom CLOSE to where your side is on the ground fighting. It doesn’t mean flying close. PGMs mean that you can fly higher out of range of ground fire, and hit targets cleanly without killing your own guys. The whole idea of CAS needing to be low-and-slow is outdated. The titanium bathtub cockpit isn’t needed if you’re not making yourself vulnerable to ground fire. That said, the A-10s might become useful domestically if the seditionists finally do what they’ve been threatening to do.

@j.chriswatson6847 <— This guy makes a lot of sense, especially his discussion of the overall system. The A-10 has been successful because it works within a well coordinated system that include aircraft in other roles. You can’t just hand over a squadron of A-10s to another country and expect them to easily integrate it into their air force. The video game fantasy of running A-10s up and down a convoy stuck and strung out for 40 miles assumes no need for SEAD. It assumes no need for fighters to chase off the bandits. Ryan was correct in talking about “bomb trucks”. PGMs should be the focus. Carried by jets, drones, rotary wing aircraft, or whatever, the most bang for the buck is a precision guided munition for a wide variety of roles. (unless you’re just trying to bomb a city or town to rubble). I wonder if a 30mm auto canon is necessary on a truck.
