  5.  @Fabian-Wenzel  I see your point, but that was a really long time ago. More recently but also long ago: in 1979, the PRC tried to invade Vietnam and had their asses handed to them. So which is it? Or maybe neither. Maybe it’s difficult to tell how good a military is today from their past glories or defeats. But the best military in the world still hasn’t answered the question, “if you win the war, how do you win the peace?”

  8. Points to the ticketing officer. Points to the department for applying proper punishment. I hesitate to award points to the driver for behaving as he should during the stop, but I’ll give him points for reporting his traffic infraction to his superior and taking the punishment. All in all, it’s sad commentary on policing in general in this country that police acting ethically is notable enough to make a video about it. Good going for this department and these individuals involved, but the context is that policing is in a sorry state.

  11.  @coldsoul333  His new wife will have to disgorge whatever property he has given her, and bankruptcy will not protect him from a civil judgement. Future earnings will be garnished and profits seized. The only way Jones can avoid paying from his future earnings and profits is to just stop working. Because his job involves working his mouth, this could lead to a happy result. I’m sure if Jones shut up forever to avoid payment, the families would consider that a victory.

  18.  @pineirokatherine  unbalancing a plane is serious but by itself probably won’t make the plane crash. It decreases safety margins. If something else goes wrong, it could compound the problem. Most of the time, I’m sure the pilots have enough skill and experience to correct and finish the flight. Where it might get dicey is on approach and landing. Iirc, that’s where most mishaps occur.
