Desantis didn’t see the Venezuelan asylum seeking families as human beings to be victimized. They were merely props for his prank. He didn’t even think he was victimizing them, since they aren’t people to him. What Desantis didn’t count on is that the intended victims were decent people that would show kindness to weary strangers in need of aid. And it’s eye opening how MAGA people don’t get this. So many are exulting in the prank as if it didn’t backfire on them.

And such a petition would invite a response from the DOJ, who might want to keep the special master a while longer. Wouldn’t Trump need to state that he doesn’t contest the status and government ownership of the documents in petitioning the court to withdraw its claims? Keeping the special master and continuing with the claim offers Trump very little wriggle room, but (imo) it’s more wiggle room than he’d get if he withdraws his claim. Withdrawing is immediate game over. Continuing is a slender thread, but a thread nonetheless. He might still find a way to muddy the waters. A comet might hit earth. His pal Putin might start WWIII.

  20. What’s really weird is that he flew these Venezuelan asylum seekers FROM SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS to Martha’s Vineyard. He had a team meet them as they left their initial asylum processing in San Antonio, and using a ruse, tricked them into boarding a plane that arrived at a different destination than these people were told. They were given a fake brochure for a non-existent aid organization in MV—when the families walked to the address on the brochure, it was an empty parking lot. I don’t think the Venezuelans were the intended victims of this cruel prank. They were merely props to Desantis. The intended victims were the “libs” living on Martha’s Vineyard. Desantis thought this prank would humiliate the people of MV and make them the butt of jokes. I think the people of MV ruined the joke with kindness to weary strangers.

  38.  @renitaperry5808  I don’t think there is a basis for arresting Barr. You’d need strong evidence that he committed a crime. Being a partisan hack is not a crime. There is a weak case that he obstructed justice, but it’s too weak to be prosecuted as a criminal case. If you want to punish Trump cronies in the criminal justice system, go after the low hanging fruit. Accountability for Barr will have to be social, political, and historical.

The sorts of crimes he is guilty of are of the sort tried in the court of public opinion or before the bar of history. Ultimately, history will pass judgement on him. Besides, there are plenty of Trump cronies that are guilty of prosecutable crimes. Go after the low hanging fruit, don’t waste time on trying to prosecute Barr.

  41. Fun, fun, fun! After years and years of suffering through this insufferable man, we are beginning to get some satisfaction. He’s finally finally hit some limits on his clowning and is clowning himself. What makes these documents so great is that this is all self-inflicted. It’s all hubris. A year ago, he could have said, “Oopsie, sorry ‘bout that, here’s the records I inadvertently took.” And it would have gone away. Another funny aspect is that this case is going to be the most clear cut in terms of prosecution. The laws are clear, the evidence is unambiguous. Nailing him for January 6th is nowhere near as clear and will be more difficult to prove. Sure, he’d still have ALL the other legal issues he’s currently facing. But I think this is the one they will get him on first. (And regardless of which case resolves first, the documents case was the first to score a real hit. It’s finally shaken the base.)

The states themselves can begin grand jury investigations, starting with the charter bus and plane companies and working their way up through the people that actually are perpetrating these cruelties at the behest of Desantis and Abbot. Start with the drivers and pilots, who got paid to move these people around. Then the managers and owners of the charter companies. Then the people that are intercepting the asylum seekers and tricking them onto the buses and planes. Find out who created the fake flyer used in MV (and any other fake documents used to fool the victims). You don’t need the feds to investigate. Each state can do it on their own. Even if it doesn’t end up with indictments or prosecutions of Abbot and Desantis, their rotten organizations must be exposed.
