I think Helvetica has been deprecated in favor of San Francisco and San Francisco Pro. Say what you will, but at least it’s not grotesque. 😉

If the skilled technicians were employed at a studio, they were union workers. You can be damn sure those numbers make it into employment reports. What about the freelance non-union workers? Those are treated as independent contractors (which they are in the tax code) when employment statistics are tallied. For other purposes, such as working conditions and workers rights, they might be treated as employees by the law. But the thing is, how many workers are we talking about in a state with 40 million people? I don’t think the number is statistically significant. The reason that runaway production is a problem is that the business is highly profitable, and California loses tax revenue when those profits move to another state. It loses tax revenue when the support companies (vendors, equipment rental companies, other suppliers) follow the out of state production.

The UC system is tops. The Cal State system is not far behind, as good or better than other state schools and competitive internationally. On top of that, our community college and city college system is pretty good at preparing students to complete their 4-year degrees at 4-year universities. What is missing is a strong vocational education system, but this is also a problem nationally.

@HarryPujols If he had said immigrants who came illegally, he could have shown a photo of Melanie.

@tedg1609 lol, do you really think that there were zero homeless before the 1980s? There have always been homeless in California. However, there have been surges of homelessness that can be correlated with different events. The closing of state mental facilities was the first. Prop 13 maybe the second. The crack cocaine epidemic (and now meth and Fetanyl) created a surge. Importation of the homeless is also something that should be looked at. States have been exporting their problems to California for decades.

What I enjoy most is the people bragging about Californians fleeing to their state turn around and complain about Californians moving to their state. The second best is conservatives who move to escape “teh libruls” discovering the hard way what it’s like to live in a conservative state.
