  3. President Sheinbaum’s putting 10,000 troops on the border is less than a tiny concession to preserve the status quo, and she got something in return. Trump promised to stop (or crack down, at least) illegal firearm exports into Mexico. Of course it remains to be seen if Trump will follow through in a meaningful way. On one hand, the NRA is going to have a fit (“muh guns”). But on the other hand, with less straw purchasers for the smugglers creating less demand, gun prices in the U.S. could drop. This would make gun owners and prospective owners happy. Edit: How could Canada possible benefit from becoming part of the U.S.? It would lose much of its sovereignty, but check it out. It would gain massive political power in the U.S. The idea of Canada become the 51st state is absurd. How about the idea of Canada becoming the 51st thru 60th state? That’s 20 senators. More if any of the Canadian territories also got state status. A block of 20 senators is a huge amount of power. Canada would be in charge of the U.S. Senate.

  4.  @itsallminor6133  I’ll say this. Trump knows how to normalize a crazy or extreme idea. And I hate to ever admit Trump has a point, there are real reasons why it would be a good idea to colonize Greenland: climate change. I’m assuming we’ve pretty much given up on halting, slowing, or controlling AGW. Greenland is going to increase in value exponentially as more habitable land and exploitable is uncovered by melting glaciers. Greenland becomes a very attractive target for expansionists countries. Trump just called first dibs. And if we can’t have it, no one else (other than the Greenlanders) gets it. Similar logic for Canada, although it’s extremely, extremely unlikely that the U.S. will take over Canada or absorb it. I’m not saying it will never happen—Canada would see benefits. But the point is that Trump’s nutty ideas are forcing us to examine the U.S.-Canada relationship and the assumptions upon which it is based. And that could lead to positive change. Personally, I think Canada, the U.S., and Mexico need greater economic cooperation and trade with each other, for security reasons as much as economic or any other reasons. Trumpian clownery and Trumpian chaos might actually accelerate the process of unifying our economies.
