  3. If Xi felt checked by responsibility, would he have purged the party of ALL opposition?. Previous leaders (from Deng forward) were kept in check by inclusion of opposition factions within the party and consensus building. The party was the dictator—I’m not under any illusion that this rule by committee is democratic. Opposition voices are useful, even in a dictatorship. They are a reality check. You must listen to them if you want to build a political consensus. Xi has rid himself and the party of any opposing views, anyone that will bring him bad news or gainsay his directives. He is the party. He is China. The rest of the party and the country are there to support him. True, both are his instruments. But you better believe he doesn’t feel checked by any sense of responsibility to anyone.
