@RonJohn63 The other half of the story isn’t being told because 1) Russia can’t release any information that would reveal to its citizens the scope of the war, 2) Russia has banned a free and independent press inside its countries. Reporters, even foreign ones working for the foreign press, are subject to arrest if they contradict the official government line. There are journalists all over Ukraine right now, in areas that Russia doesn’t control. They often have to dodge Russian soldiers who shoot at them—identifying yourself as a member of the press apparently doesn’t protect you with the Russians.

Sanctions aren’t a deterrent, threat of sanctions are a deterrent. Maybe it’s time the Russian people start caring about what happens to them, if their leaders don’t care.

@StompingRabbits No, Patrick, Russia can’t replace the degraded units with other units guarding Russia’s borders. They’re ostensibly there guarding the border against NATO and other threats, no? If Putin starts removing his border armies to send them to Ukraine, that really undermines his claim that NATO is threatening Russia. On top of that, Moscow is not popular with other parts of the Russian Federation. They need to keep a large number of soldiers through Russia to control unrest. The don’t want a new insurgency in Chechnya. No, Russia is near the limit of the forces it can send, without compromising its own security elsewhere.

It was kind of like a Russian Operation Market-Garden, wasn’t it? “An Airport Too Far”.

Sanctions on a person or a country punish a behavior until the person or country stop doing the behavior. Additionally, economic sanctions hinder the person’s or country’s ability to finance the undesired behavior.

You’ll be relieved to hear that the tank is fine, but its transfer to Ukrainian defense forces is still pending.

Nah. Just surrendering is a big enough help.

@new_svitolad He’s not a pro-Russian idiot, he’s a pro-Putin Russian.

@jaredsmith112 Send them to a neutral country like Poland for detention until hostilities cease. Or Spain. I guess Poland is already doing a lot and we should ask another non-combatant country. So, yeah, Spain would be pretty good.

That’s about the size of it. In Western militaries, it’s not uncommon for a general to visit close to the front for a limited time to get a better sense of a situation, but they’re not exposing themselves like these Russians apparently are. They don’t try to micromanage the battalions. That’s what their subordinates are for.
