“How can you have an undercover operation without a pastor?” I know there are many that want Grady to run for office. I think the community would be better off if he stayed sheriff and did stand up comedy on the weekends.

Carry a hammer and go out of your way to find anything that might be a nail. Proceed to hammer before you know if it’s a nail.

He’s a good cop and runs a tight ship. He’s not afraid to clean his own house, either, and is transparent about that, too. He doesn’t take shortcuts and expects his people to do the same.

Disney is not the only business operating in Florida with a special district agreement. If you think that a state takeover of a business is a way of “leveling the playing field”, you’re a socialist. That’s what’s amazing to me: so many people who claim to be conservative are secretly socialists. Maybe you don’t claim to be a conservative. Maybe you are open about being a socialist. If that’s the case, I apologize for implying you suffer from cognitive dissonance or are a hypocrite.

And the development funded by the bonds is done. All this does is slow or stop future Disney development, meaning less money going into the Florida economy. Disney can go elsewhere for expansion. It might be wiser to do so anyway. Disney isn’t the only corporation in Florida operating with this special agreement. Florida could have intelligently unwound the agreement and created a law to dissolve all the agreements if it made economic sense (and I think it would have, fostering competition and an open and fair market across the Florida economy. Done right, this could have been pro-business. But instead of doing it right for Florida, they did it right for Desantis when he runs for President in 2024. He’s not going to pay off the obligations, Florida is. And apparently, Floridians are willing to bend over and take it. Why? To own the libs.

@drebk is he representing himself or does he have a lawyer? Entrapment defenses rarely win even with a lawyer. Without one, when the defendant represents himself, the entrapment defense is most likely a lost cause. It’s a damn shame that someone who served his country honorably was brainwashed by the Big Lie peddlers and dishonored himself by participating in a seditious riot. I hope they get the puppet masters who played the rioters like they were marionettes, as well as the thugs. And let’s be clear: this former patriot was a thug, however it was that he got radicalized and whomever did it. He did it to himself as well.

@jiminy82 Disney is regulated by the same laws. You could also get your own special district if you could create jobs and development at the same level as Disney. Actually, the bar is lower than that. Create jobs and development at the level of The Villages and you too will qualify to be get a special district. You seem to think that Disney was not following the laws or doing something illegal that caused the takeover in the first place. But you don’t know what because . . . surprise! They were following the laws. Do you even know the reason there are these special development districts? It’s not so Disney can have it’s own state within a state. It’s so Disney can develop its property as it sees fit. It allows Disney to execute ambitious plans to expand its business and create jobs and generate tax revenue. Do you know who hates it when companies succeed? Socialists. Ron Desantis is a a closet socialist. Are you?

@Chrishansen999 And it’s sad to see how many Florida parents have forgotten that “cleanliness is next to Godliness”. If you want to raise your children like slobs, go ahead. Just don’t try to regulate other parents’ right to see that their children are bathed, wear clean clothes, and get hair cuts. I’m just astounded by how the formerly conservative Florida GOP has turned into a bunch of smelly hippies trying to drag everyone else down to their level of squalor and lack of hygiene. Are you going to outlaw tooth brushing and flossing next?

Two suggestions: 1) learn how to fix a flat yourself, 2) don’t ever get lost and knock on the wrong door or turn around in the wrong drive way. In this case, the killer was a felon with a record of violence, but in many other cases the killers of lost people are average gun owners overly eager to use their weapons.

@ClockworkGearhead Not liking something and expressing that dislike isn’t the same as “retaliating”, unless you’ve got the thinnest skin in the world and opposing opinions hurt your feelings. This isn’t Florida breaking a “special relationship”. It’s Desantis breaking an agreement that worked very well for both the people of Florida and for Disney.
7
@ClockworkGearhead Your statement of how Disney supposedly retaliated makes no sense. They “manipulated with Florida’s legislation”. What does that even mean? Maybe you should take another run at this.
6
There is a right way and a wrong way to dissolve an agreement. Florida chose the wrong way because it appeals to fringe culture warriors and helps Desantis in the 2024 presidential election.
4
@HorizonEyes Right? This doesn’t mean it’s set in stone—it might come down to the courts interpreting what the laws mean and how they should be executed. We can still work out what the results might be. The governor’s and legislature’s rushed action might be a bust because they didn’t take the time to get it right—they were too focused on their political performance. The political theater—publicly stating that they are retaliating against Disney because it expressed an opinion—will make it harder to defend their case in court. Disney isn’t the only corporation in Florida with a special self-government zone. Is Florida going to go after these other corporations, too? Or only Disney? The right way to do this would have been to tone down the rhetoric of retaliation and write a good law to end these corporate carve outs if they were truly a problem. That would be rational and prudent conservatism, and would still promote an environment that doesn’t discourage businesses. If the law was then applied fairly to all corporations with these self-governing privileges, it would actually be MORE encouraging to more businesses and MORE conservative. It would make the market more competitive. I really think the Florida GOP picked the wrong club to punish Disney. The hypocrisy on display is what I would expect from Dems*, not Republicans. At least not “old school” conservative Republicans. The party has certainly changed for the worst. *not all Democrat politicians, but you can probably make a list of the corrupt ones that would not be a short list.

If by chance the reporters read this: great team coverage and great use of social media. You guys and your team are doing a great job and you’ve hit upon a great format.
4
I think he’s offed himself.
4
@SplotPublishing Desantis isn’t on the hook, Florida is. Desantis is using this to prepare his run for President.
3
Josh Schmidt A contractual agreement between a corporation and government is still a contractual agreement. There was a right way to do this that would have unwound the agreements (Disney isn’t the only corporation in Florida with special self governing privileges) and/or renegotiated them. Now it will be up to the courts to decide, and the Florida GOP faces an uphill battle. And because the new law was presented dramatically as retaliatory and punitive, the state might even have to pay court costs! This poorly constructed law is bad for Floridians, but good for Desantis when he runs for President.
3
Sheriff Grady Judd has the deadpan down cold.
3
“Mom, I’m heartbroken. Gabby left me.” Oh, my God. I’m calling the police! Use your intelligence (and you’re obviously intelligent). We don’t know what Brian told his parents. Whatever he did tell them will come out, either voluntarily or at the trial, when they can be compelled to testify, whether or not that testimony is used against their son. Unlike spousal privilege, there is no parental privilege by which they can decline to testify.
3
He’s lost the thread, but I don’t think he cares. This isn’t about what’s good for Florida, it’s about running for President.
3
@trumpdrago517 They wouldn’t move the park. They would just create another park and focus investment, expansion, and development there. This is going to hurt Florida more than it will hurt Disney. The one person who benefits is Desantis, whose national profile has been raised for the 2024 presidential election.
3
Move to Russia.
2
I heard of this guy. He’s called “Goat the Bounty Hunter”, although his friends call him Cabron.
2
@savannah505 You apparently are operating with a faulty understanding of the word “investigate”. It does not mean ordering law enforcement agencies under your control to dig up dirt on your political opponents. I’m awaiting your “the other side does it” deflection. Actually, I won’t. I’m tired of countering lies and distortions with the truth.
2
To paraphrase a line from the movie Chinatown, “It’s Florida, Jake.” There’s crime everywhere in the U.S. If it seems more prevalent in Polk County, it’s because Grady Judd takes transparency and building community trust seriously—even if it makes his department look bad (last week’s arrest of one of his deputies, for example). Also, it’s Florida. 😄
2
Thanks for sharing your feeeeeeeeelings on the matter. They really contribute to the conversation.
2
Nah. That’s silly. However, Disney is much less likely to continue expansion and development in Florida. And other businesses, seeing how punishments are arbitrarily meted out by the government, might also hesitate to invest in Florida. Not only has the state increased its financial obligations, it’s created a worse business environment. On there is a positive side, at least for Desantis. This little theatrical performance of the Culture War is part of his presidential campaign.
2
@dimviesel His statement is reasonable. It’s certainly not inflammatory or extreme.
2
I’m quite certain that many other law enforcement agencies across the country work just as diligently. The big difference is that Sheriff Grady Judd is devoted to public education and transparency. He doesn’t just give lip service to community relations, he spearheads it. When he reports the results of investigations (which he does on a regular basis), he includes various messages to the community to be aware of similar crimes. It’s corny, but he is constantly exhorting and appealing to members of the community to do what’s right. It’s also noteworthy that he includes exculpatory evidence. For example, in this case he mentions several times that one of the suspects didn’t personally profit, but participated in the crime as a favor to someone for whom she felt sorry. Who does that in this day and age? Law enforcement officials utterly devoted to fairness and justice, that’s who. We must continue to press for police reform in many communities, but we should also be proud of our LE agencies for all the things they do right. As you suggest, Polk County should be ESPECIALLY proud of the PCSO and Sheriff Grady Judd. His department is a model for law enforcement.
2
Floridian Republicans are so confused, they think that being a socialist is conservative. They’re applauding the attempted government takeover of a business to (in their words) level the playing field.
2
“Their hate will be exposed!” I didn’t realize they were trying to hide it. If so, they were doing a really bad job. Imho, what has been exposed is the shortsightedness of cutting off your nose to spite your face.
2
The manager that did a favor for her employ? It’s not the motivation that was the crime, but the favor itself that was a criminal act.
2
Desantis is a socialist. What else do you call government take over of a business? I had no idea that so many so-called conservatives were closet socialists. How did that happen? How did the Florida GOP become a socialist organization? Desantis is worse than Bernie Sanders (who I think is misguided but means well). Some people say Desantis has formed a cult of personality around himself, but I don’t get it. Where’s the personality? The dude makes Ted Cruz look like Miss Congeniality.
2
@jeremiahjenkins4098 Haha, you have no standing to sue Disney. You’ll have to sue your state government.
2
I’m thinking Grady Judd is more like a Tommy Lee Jones type. And anyway, Wayne was a bit of a fraud, even if his politics were correct. But do you know what’s better than winning an award? Having an award named after you. I propose a Sheriff Grady Judd Award for excellence in policing.
2
@beachlifechris Why do GOP politicians keep appointing these liberal judges? How can we stop these soft-on-crime Florida Republicans?
2
@STHFGDBY These numb nuts trolls trying to politicize crime probably aren’t even Americans. They think Florida is a liberal state.
2
Maybe when he retires, but I think he loves what he is doing too much to get distracted by fame and fortune. The “fame” and positive regard he gets in his own community seems to be enough.
2
@dominiquea.bryant-freeland628 If they sincerely feel that Disney is doing wrong, let them boycott. It’s about more than trying to hurt a corporation. It’s about having some sort of moral compass. By their lights (right or wrong), Disney is acting immorally. Boycotting is 100% in keeping with democracy and 100% American. It’s this ill conceived legislative foolery that is worse than useless. It’s anti democracy, anti-American, unconstitutional, anti-conservative, and just plain dumb.
2
Not worth the cost. That goal could have been easily accomplished by focused legislation that would result in unencrypted radio traffic. Legislation intended to punish a corporation for expressing its political opinion is neither conservative nor wise. It needs to be carefully written and carefully considered, and then applied to all corporations with these jurisdictional carve outs. That the Florida GOP needed to act (emphasis on act, because this is so much political theater) in this manner tells me that they feel weak on this issue. They’re pounding the table because the crisis is manufactured.
2
Too many unknowns to be placing bets wrt to more victims. At this point, we don’t even know if the second set of DNA samples is from a victim or in any way related to the crime. You could be right, but the sloppy disposal of the body doesn’t point to the suspect being well practiced. That said, I’m wondering about the wife’s overdose—was it really accidental?
2
Baker Act is 51/50? Psychiatric observation?
2
@timw8649 He’s off on a tangent. I don’t know if the tangent is based on facts or not (tbh, it sounds about right 😖), but it’s not directly related to the case that the Polk County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
2
They’re not going to move the amusement park, but they might move the cruise lines, and explore other states for future expansion and development. The majority of expansion has been at Disney World Florida, but that could change because of Florida’s sudden turn to a negative business environment.
2
Did you know that the First Amendment applies to corporations?

For those who are hesitating to get vaccinated, these men risked their careers to fraudulently obtain vaccine doses. This is not proof of their efficacy, but it’s proof that they thought the vaccine is efficacious. One of them was a medical professional, recognized for his achievements, prior to getting caught.
1
You dummies, this was the Indiana Parole Board that released the felon. It had nothing to do with the prosecutors or the judge that tried him. If you’re going to have opinions about the criminal justice systems in the U.S., at least educate yourselves so you don’t say ignorant things that have no basis in the facts. Blame the parole board, if you must. If you want to blame the politicians that appointed the parole board, the last three governors of Indiana are Eric Holcomb (incumbent), Mike Pence, and Mitch Daniels.

You’re in favor of dirty children? Why would you be against children washing, wearing clean clothes, or getting their haircut. All of you anti-groomers sound like freaks with dirty minds.
