  1. Please stay safe and take care! I hate cold. My apartment is drafty, and when it gets very cold it is miserable. I finally got a propane heater which has been helping this winter. I avoided using the electric heater because of cost. I’ve been doubling up with my masks. I wear a KN95 and a surgical mask over that. It seems to provide a better seal while also being more comfortable, which surprised me. I expected it would be uncomfortable.

  2. Dr. John Campbell is an excellent explainer with decades of experience as a registered nurse and as a professor at a nursing college, training other nurses. He’s a qualified expert and interpreter of medical science to us laypeople. He’s not an MD, nor does he claim to be. He legitimately uses the title doctor because he holds a PhD. I just thought you should be clear on that so you’re not disappointed later.

  3.  @Norcalchoom  My landlord got it in the spring, and is still bed bound because of respiratory issues. (Eight other people on my street have died, three of them young people.) I’m not sure what he plans to do as I have not seen him in months. Maybe I’ll ask his son (who has been collecting the rent). By the way, Tom is an antivaxxer troll. Consult your physician, as always, but don’t debate or engage with lying trolls.

  4.  @kxmode  The Coronavirus Pandemic in the U.S. was preceded by an epidemic of mass psychosis brought on by bouts of political rhetoric. I’m not sure if the trolls that plague these comments are garden variety conspiracy nutters or servants of a darker agenda, but they represent a real threat to our health and safety.

  7. There’s also the issue that when the hospitals in regions suffering outbreaks are overwhelmed, quality and timeliness of medical care suffers. Someone suffering a catastrophic injury that might otherwise be saved doesn’t make it to the hospital in time, or makes it to the ER, but doesn’t get immediate care.

  10. It’s a bad point for misunderstanding. The tendency towards less virulence might take decades or centuries to unfold. It’s better to think of there being an upper limit or ceiling to virulence. A virus that kills its host too quickly won’t be able to replicate and be transmitted for very long, and will burn itself out. However, a virus with a high rate of transmissibility has a higher virulence ceiling. With high transmissibility, there isn’t as much selective pressure on virulence.

  28. Thanks for reporting recent experiences. I live in a tourist town in Mexico and there is little public testing. If omicron isn’t already present, I suspect it will get here sooner rather than later due to visitors. I’ve seen an uptick in mask wearing, for what it’s worth, although on the streets I’ve seen many not wearing masks. (I strongly suspect these are visitors from the U.S. who have “political motivations” to flout local regulations and guidelines. It’s the start of the winter tourist season, as many snowbirds flee the U.S. for the relatively milder climes of Mexico.) I suspect Japan is faring better because the culture there is more aligned with social cooperation or social ethics. The idea of everyone pulling together when facing a crisis is accepted. It’s considered to be mature, adult behavior. Contrast this with behavior we’ve seen in the U.S. among large swathes of the population that seem to suffer from cognitive and moral disabilities. Let’s hope omicron symptoms are less severe, as your experience suggests.

I had no idea that seemingly ordinary people would become so irresponsible, selfish, and delusional. If it wasn’t for the politics, perhaps people would be sensible about temporary restrictions. If guidelines were followed, the sooner we could recover. Four years ago, I realized that many Republicans were drifting away from conservatism into authoritarianism. Until this pandemic, I hadn’t realized they had run headlong into mass psychosis.

  31. There are too many adults with the psychological development of a toddler. We have laws because not everyone acts like responsible adults. Adults make rules to regulate the behavior of children, and the same thing should apply for childish adults when people’s health or life is at stake. Toddlers don’t know any better, but adults should understand that this is an emergency that requires acting together. “I don’t wanna” and throwing a tantrum doesn’t cut it. I have this feeling that if the virus was passed on by exposure to fecal matter, some of these idiots would insist on their right to shit on the sidewalks and wipe their soiled hands on doorknobs. If the virus spread via farts, they’d be running around pantsless with their private bits on public display, and gathering in enclosed spaces to smell each other’s farts just to prove a political point.

Next thing you know they’ll require licenses for driving a car and some form of identification to cash checks. I bet they will require proof that I’m a qualified doctor/lawyer/dentist/plumber, which will throw a bureaucratic wrench into my law firm that offers medical, dentistry, and emergency plumbing services. This is creeping socialism meant to extinguish the entrepreneurial spirit of those without the time or inclination to study and qualify for their professions. Let’s face it. We in the West probably eat a great deal more animal protein than we need (or is healthy in some cases), but a strict vegan diet seems mostly suitable for those that can afford all sorts of supplements and workarounds. I generally limit my meat intake to a couple of meals a week, mostly on environmental grounds although I have an old friend who is an ethical vegan who I suppose has also influenced me. I don’t mind his fanaticism, however, as it involves taking me out to a vegan restaurant when I’m in town. I say he’s an “ethical vegan”, because it’s an outgrowth of his work against animal cruelty. Most of my protein intake comes from . . . beans. Beans, rice, and tortillas, with pickled chiles on the side. I’ve become accustomed to jalapeños, they’re mild enough to me that I eat two or three without feeling “overheated”.

If you as a parent don’t want your children to wear masks or receive the vaccine, you are free to homeschool them. You are also free to create your own private schools with likeminded parents.
