Why not another nominee from the Democrats, a nominee palatable to the handful of GOP Congresspeople willing to break with their own party?

I wouldn’t say he wimped out. I’d say he refused to be MTG’s and Gaetz’ bitch. He refused to suffer the same fate as McCarthy.

He got the Republican conference’s nomination, but to get the votes he’d basically have to submit to the extreme nutjobs of the GOP like McCarthy did, and we’d be back at square one.

If that’s what the Dems want, then the ball is in their court to negotiate with moderate Republican Congresspeople. Are the Dems willing to make compromises to their liberal agenda? Can they offer assurances that they won’t stab them in the back in 2024? To make Jeffries the speaker, you’d basically have to form a coalition with the “moderate conservative” faction. Are you willing to do that? Can you do that without splitting your own party?

It will only happen if the Dems nominate (and vote for) Cheney or Kinzinger. Jeffries would have to withdraw (although he could still lead his conference).

@BlueJazzBoyNZ The Dems would have to offer huge concessions to the GOP “moderate conservatives” for these representatives to risk being primaried. The Democrats would risk splitting apart their own party.

Interesting idea. How many “present, not voting” GOP Congresspeople would it take? However, are the Dems willing to negotiate and compromise to bring these GOP congresspeople on board to make Jeffries the Speaker? What are you willing to give away in order to form a coalition with the “sane faction” of the Republican Party (assuming it exists).

Are you willing to compromise on any of your liberal and/or progressive policies to get those 5 republicans? How about the Dems back a more moderate Congressperson from their caucus to be Speaker? It gets complicated if you want to form a coalition that pulls your party towards the center.

@Ivan-bw6iw I’m a conservative voter, formerly registered as a Republican. I’ve never been a member of the Democrat party. The people who vote for the likes of Matt Gaetz and MTG are delusional fools that should be ashamed of themselves. They seem to be incapable of shame, however, even as they burn down the GOP. Ultimately they are to blame for the GOP disarray in the House of Representatives. There is no need for sane people to coddle these moral infants so as not to alienate them. That’s how we got to this point—a craven political class that never gave their moron constituency the hard news and always told them what they wanted to hear. You really don’t need to worry about alienating the “Dumb Voter”, my liberal and progressive friends. They could have voted for more serious problem solving conservatives, but they voted for firebrands for the entertainment value. For the entertainment value! You don’t want their votes. Maybe you want the votes of the people adjacent to them, people who are capable of remorse and who are capable of returning to reason, but you don’t need the idiot nutjobs. That’s what got us here in the first place—the GOP is hostage to extremist because they DIDN’T rein in the crazies and imbeciles. We (the GOP) used to expel people like the Birchers and discredit them with ridicule. Go ahead and laugh at the GOP clowns and rubes. They’re already making themselves the butt of a very sick joke. You do not want to become reliant on their votes in any way. Edit: I just realized you’re the leftist equivalent of the right wing moron voter. Have a nice day.

The Dems could nominate her and back her with their votes. Are they willing to form a centrist coalition? Can they form a centrist coalition without ripping apart their own party? If Cheney is a serious Dem proposal, you’re asking the Dem minority in Congress to take on huge risk. It’s much safer for the Dems to sit back and watch the GOP fall apart.
