I took a perverse pride in McConnell’s dirty political fighting skills. The way he finessed RBG’s seat was breathtaking. I understand why the Democrats hated him so much. He was effective. Much the same way that Republicans hate Nancy Pelosi because she was equally effective. Nancy will go down in history as a hero. McConnell will go down in history as a coward. Now it is up to us to do what Mitch failed to do: stop Trump. Casting your vote for Biden is not enough. You’ve got to get involved. Make sure voters get to the polls. Make sure people are registered. Work a phone bank or walk a precinct. Don’t take this election for granted. We’ve not only got to win, we got to win by a large margin.

McConnell’s crowning achievement, his swan song, SHOULD have been the Border-Ukraine aid bill, where he literally got both of his cakes by playing especially sleazy hard ball. He got everything he and the Republicans said they wanted with regard to the border “crisis”, and he got aid for Ukraine. But it all came unraveled because Trump vetoed it, and the reason Trump could veto it is because McConnell was derelict in his duty to convict Trump. Members of both the House and Senate could have campaigned on this victory that bent over the same barrel both the Dems and the extreme right. They were solving problems! They made the Dems blink by playing chicken with Ukraine aid. They were proving that they could be effective. They would have taken credit, and Biden would end up looking too conciliatory. But Trump wasn’t a part of it, couldn’t take credit, and would be left without one of his main issues on which to campaign. So Trump predictably threw a wrench in the works. This would have been a crowning achievement for Mitch, his strong finish. He’d be going out a winner. Instead it’s a tragic farce and a failure that makes the entire GOP look like idiots and gives the high ground to the Dems. It’s all because McConnell didn’t have the guts to politically strangle Trump when he had the chance.
