Asking you as one with experience in the matter, which sounds like a more serious request? “No peanut butter because I have an allergy” or “I don’t like peanut butter.” ——- “Even a little bit of peanut butter can cause me to die.” or “Peanut butter is gross.” ————— I don’t know what the 17-year old peanut victim told the workers, but they don’t seem like evil or stupid people. I’m going to assume he didn’t clearly express his needs. I bet he expresses them clearly next time.

  2. I think the apology is sincere—he’s accepting responsibility. We’ll see what a judge says (and a jury, if he fights charges). Losing his high paying job at Merrill Lynch is pretty harsh social punishment, but there must be some form of official censure beyond that. Secondarily—I do not blame these kids at all. Businesses that serve food to the public need to have policy and training in place wrt customers with allergies. If the kids aren’t trained to fulfill allergy based requests, that’s the company’s fault. If a company is failing their customers in this way, it’s up to the customer to go elsewhere.
