  1. I’d be careful about assumptions before Ukraine confirms. Russia has not officially declared war yet, and denies to the Russian people it is at war, as you know. This prevents them from calling up reservists. The lack of a state of war means that the more experienced conscripts are about to be released from service, to be replaced by a new herd of fresh faced teenagers. What I am saying is that a nearly impossible attack like this might be a false flag operation to prepare the Russian public for a declaration of war, so that Russia can switch to a war time mobilization. It might be Russia attacking itself to sway public opinion and give Putin the justification for escalation—and I know it might be hard to imagine how he could be more murderous towards the civilian population, but he can if he can convince the Russian people that Ukraine is an existential threat to them. Edit: but if I am wrong and this attack speeds up the exit of Russian forces from Ukraine, then I say Hallelujah!
