The original Bolsheviks had connections to organized crime even before the revolution. SMERSH was originally formed as a bandit organization with state approval. Stalin was an honest-to-God bank robber before he joined the party. The Soviet Union was a house of kleptocracy, with a display of socialism in the front window. The only thing that changed is the gangsters rebranded the country, changed the name and logo, and changed the window display.
