@badgerpa9 No. An attorney representing a client in a land dispute would send an investigator to examine the county land records. If necessary, they would hire a professional surveyor to go out—that’s what’s called an expert witness. Your example is silly. In this case, the law firm failed to confirm the veracity of a request (for a gay wedding website) and submitted it to the court as a supplemental document—as a type of supporting evidence—to bolster their case. And it turns out that the request was bogus and fraudulently submitted because the law firm failed to verify the request. This is taking them at their word and giving them the benefit of the doubt. The firm’s statement might contain falsehoods—I’d be much more convinced if the spokesman made the statement under oath inside a courtroom. But if we assume the facts that the law firm admits are correct, they brought this on themselves. It’s dishonorable weak to blame others for their mistake.

Disbarment is a pretty heavy penalty if it was unintentional, but certainly the lawyer who submitted the fraudulent document should be sanctioned.
