  1. Soft power. The Normans were wise enough to build up and replace what they knocked down, and they used religion and the abbey system to deepen their hold on the Northern parts of their kingdom. The violent campaign of suppression gave them physical control, but turning to a strategy of soft power gave them legitimacy. And no doubt the economic expansion benefited their coffers—they didn’t give away all their lands to the monks.
