All of those😅 guys, plus: Vlad Vexler for perspectives on Russian politics (and more general discussions of political philosophy and opinion), and for deep history I go to Timothy Snyder. Snyder is CURRENTLY teaching a class on Ukrainian History at Yale and releasing videos of the course. We’re up to the year 1699 after 11 lectures. I highly recommend Snyder for his historical perspective. He’s also given talks on the Nazi and Soviet genocides in Ukraine, the not-quite-fascism of contemporary autocracies, and other topics. Another good guy for Russian history during the Soviet Period is Steven Kotkin, author of a three volume biography of Stalin. He has an opinion or two about Putin. 😊

It’s not the deep cold that will slow the offensive. The deep cold will freeze the ground, making it firmer for assaults with tracked vehicles. The current concern is the early winter rains, which will generate a lot of mud. Mud will halt an advance faster than cold and snow will.

If you want to get into the history of the area, you want to watch Timothy Snyder’s course lectures on Ukrainian history at Yale University. The videos of his lectures are being released about a day after he gives them. The latest video was released yesterday and is the 11th one (bringing us up to 1699). Belarus’s relation to Ukraine, Lithuania, Poland, and Russia is complicated and develops over centuries. The thing I like about Snyder’s lectures is he de-centers Western Europe. Something I gleaned from his lectures so far that I think you’ll like: a lot of the history is about North-South dynamics, less emphasis on the west.

@lorenzcassidy3960 Wagner winners of quota contests get a special treat prepared by Putin’s chef: a shit sandwich, and everyone in the organization has to take a bite.

Enough for what? Probably not enough to open a third offensive, but they seem to have sufficient forces for the two ongoing counteroffensives.

@johnle6982 just FYI, forces being trained, training, trainees etc., have nothing to do with railroads.

Early winter = rain. Rain = mud. Mud = slow. That is the current concern.

Second best case is a siege. (First best is a rapid Russian withdrawal.) Russian soldiers are going to engage in war crimes whether or not there is a siege. A siege will save lives all around: Ukrainian civilians, Ukrainian soldiers, and Russian soldiers that are forced to surrender.
