True. However, Ukraine has not banned an independent press. It hasn’t made reporting a crime. Ukrainian claims can be fact-checked, confirmed or debunked. Russia has no independently press and reporting the news, even if it’s being published outside of Russia, is a crime. It’s exceedingly difficult and risky to check Russian claims from within Russia or the territories it controls. For this reason, the Ukrainians might exaggerate the truth, but their claims generally don’t depart from it. Russian claims not so much.

They’ve already started up the Moldovan “festivities”, although at this point I think it will avail them nothing. It’s strong evidence that they were planning to roll right into Moldova, imho. Unless you think it’s purely transnistrians acting spontaneously, it’s obvious that Russia was preparing for this.

You’re 100% right. And if you don’t obsessively care for you vinyl records, the can become dusty, further degrading the sound and (if you play a dusty record) degrading the vinyl itself. Excessive heat can warp a record. Records become scratched. All sorts of things can affect the accuracy. However, for some people, the hisses and pops on a beloved record played hundreds of times becomes part of the experience. It’s been decades since I made the transition to CDs, then digital downloads, and now streaming, and I don’t miss the hisses and pops as much as I used to when I first began buying CDs. All that noise imbued a side with a sense of personal history. But I got over it. 😄

The Germans understood from the outset that they couldn’t win a war of attrition, which was the whole impetus behind developing the combined arms doctrine later called Blitzkreig. At the time of its adoption, it won out against other more infantry focused doctrines. Where Blitzkrieg against the Soviet Union fell short was not merely due to production. IMHO, the biggest initial factor was the vast distances the German offensive needed to cover to meet strategic goals. During the initial months of Case Blau, the Nazis enjoyed operational successes but failed strategically. The Soviets succeeded strategically by DELAYING the Nazis while suffering many early tactical defeats. This bought time to MOVE production east and ramp it up. Kursk wasn’t so much a turning point as it was the German’s last offensive opportunity, but IMO, the die was cast during the first year.

There is a proper name for the patented technology you so casually refer to as a “jack in the box”. It’s called the Popov Turret Mechanism.

The amount of waste cooking oil isn’t sufficient to satisfy diesel needs. I’m glad that hobbyists and tinkerers are visiting fast food restaurants to recycle their waste oil, but this isn’t a viable solution at anything beyond the individual hobbyist scale. Algae-based diesel is the most promising biofuel. It’s manufacture can scale down as well as up (meaning individuals can create it—the process itself isn’t extremely exotic). But all that said, we need to be moving away from combustion fuels as much as possible. Biofuels are a stopgap, not a replacement.

Not to mention unprotected rounds under the turret for the auto loader aka the Popov Mechanism.

I think it’s more about the predictable use of tanks on or near roads. From the videos I’ve seen, these tanks are not being destroyed in isolation for the most part. They’re being destroyed because you really need very wide screens of unmounted infantry to support them. Over watching vehicles are not enough and are lucky to get away themselves. They often don’t. The predictable paths the Russians are using allows the Ukrainian tank killer teams to set up ambushes, which is why you’ll often see small groups of vehicles destroyed.

@anthonyrau5313 That’s why we use deaths per mile as the metric, as was discussed in the video. The only area where that falls short is that it doesn’t account for the likelihood that the other car in a two car collision is (in the U.S.) is more likely to be a larger, heavier vehicle such as the popular Ford F-150 pickup truck. It was discussed in the video.

Shaped charge weapons like the PIAT, Bazooka, and Panzerfaust were developed well before the end of the war. There was also a rifle grenade, the M-9, that went into production in January 1942 and was used throughout the war. However, shaped charges had been used for a much longer time in mining operations. (I don’t recall how far back, you could look it up. In addition to shaped charge, search for Monroe Effect.) Hope this helps and that you found it interesting.

@colinkennedy1718 The main pro of using guided missiles as tank rounds is effective precision. However, they are much more expensive while not providing substantive advantage, and as you note, are slower velocity. In a contest where getting the first shot gives considerable advantage (even if it’s not a kill), I could see why APFSDS are more popular when your tank is facing other tanks.

If he hasn’t thrown them out, I’ve probably got a small collection of LPs in a box in my dad’s garage. I doubt they’re worth much if anything—they were well used and not especially well taken care of. But the thing I miss about LPs is the album covers. It’s not worth it to me to buy a phonograph stereo set up and vinyl records of my favorites, but if I could afford it, that would the reason. It’s specifically the album art (and liner notes in some cases) that I would like to own.

Air resistance, you say? That’s a drag. 😫 What’s even more tragic is the long term damage Putin is doing to the Russian space program.
