I’m questioning the idea that a super long convoy stuck on the road is standard operational procedure.

That’s completely wrong. The goal was to destroy the US fleet, not to convince the U.S. that the cost of war was too high or to send oil. The reason to destroy the Pacific Fleet was buy time for the Japanese. Yamamoto figured that it would set the U.S. back six months, and by that time the Japanese could accomplish their goals in the Southeast Asia and South Pacific. After six months, the U.S. would be able to rebuild its fleet.

WRT to official propaganda, Ukraine doesn’t prevent independent journalists verifying claims. Russia doesn’t allow independent journalists and has made it a crime within Russia to report anything negative about the war. They’ve even made it illegal to call it a war; two tv stations were closed down for calling it a war instead of the official “Special Military Operation”. An example of journalists fact checking claims is Sky News investigating claims that small units (squads) of Russian soldiers had infiltrated the lines and were killing civilians in civilian areas, including the cease fire corridors set up to allow civilians to escape. The news crew met one of these squads—and were lucky to escape with their lives, although two members were shot. (These aren’t “warning shots”.) So there you go, Ukraine makes a claim, and independent journalists are able to fact check. Russia makes a claim, and . . . we’re supposed to take their word for it, I guess.
