  2. That’s completely wrong. The goal was to destroy the US fleet, not to convince the U.S. that the cost of war was too high or to send oil. The reason to destroy the Pacific Fleet was buy time for the Japanese. Yamamoto figured that it would set the U.S. back six months, and by that time the Japanese could accomplish their goals in the Southeast Asia and South Pacific. After six months, the U.S. would be able to rebuild its fleet.
