  2. Tariffs will pay for subsidies, not the tax payer. Didn’t you know that Trump tariffs are magical and don’t cause inflation because the price increases are never passed on to the consumer? Trump tariffs will pay for everything. It’s like free money. lol, just kidding. Obviously the above claims are pure nonsense. That said, subsidies in the form of tax breaks that create NEW economic activity are less of a tax burden than you might think. Federal and state governments are foregoing tax revenue that didn’t exist previously. So over the long term they aren’t really costing anything (hopefully), they might create eventual revenue (best case), or they might have a smaller cost but have other benefits that make the cost worthwhile. Put another way, it’s not a loss of revenue if that revenue wasn’t there to begin with. Granted, a lot depends on how the tax break is structured. I’m sure we can imagine scenarios were it all goes wrong and instead of growth, there is merely a shift of activity from existing ports. I haven’t read the legislation that was just passed. I guess Sal hasn’t had a chance to analyze it either because it got pushed through the House of Representatives so quickly.
