I think this is why the fire extinguisher(s) are so funny. Even if everything else lined up, why the frikkin frakkin firetruck would anyone strap fire extinguishers to their legs prior to flying the plane. The fire extinguishers demolish any doubt.

The funny thing is that we don’t want to rush to judgement, but if you examine the video and follow the commentary I doubt you will find a single legit thing about the entire escapade. It’s like a ball of loose threads. Nothing about his story holds together. Even the least consequential thing—the ashes for example—has the aroma of bullsh¡t. As far as whether it will end well for him, I get the impression that he has wealthy parents that will pay his fines, hire a lawyer for him, and continue to bankroll his “adventurer lifestyle”. He will very likely lose his pilot license, but I am not going to hold my breath that he will ever go to prison for this incident.

@B2BWide That’s a good saying! I think Trevor Jacob is one of those rich kids with more money than intelligence. That’s probably enough of a fence to keep most poor fools from trying to imitate him.

Is it possible that as a result of Trevor’s stunt, the FAA will crack down on unauthorized exterior camera mounts on certified planes? Or is this risk being exaggerated?

It’s definitely not definite. The FAR violations are administrative, not criminal. He won’t face prison time for those. The other charges you mentioned are not as easy to cleanly prosecute and to result in a prison sentence. I suspect that Trevor (or his mom and dad) can afford good lawyers who can minimize any consequences he might have to face.

@andrewtaylor940 You have it 100% right. Trevor Jacob currently only faces an administrative investigation and hearing before the FAA. It’s already clear that there are a number of things on which they can cite him, but other than fines and losing his license, there’s not much they can do. There is a possibility that the National Forest Service can begin their own investigation concurrent to the FAA investigation. I highly doubt the NTSB will conduct their own investigation as others have suggested above. It’s really too minor, and the possible causes of the crash are not complicated (either he faked the engine failure or he had engine failure to which he responded with incompetence). Edit: A few more details (so maybe you’re not at 100%) #1. As of yet, there is no evidence that Trevor Jacob hired the helicopter or even that the copter moved the crash remains. #2. The incident took place in close proximity to the wildlife preserve, but it doesn’t look like the crash occurred inside its boundaries. However, because of the endangered species being protected (California Condor), the airspace is also tightly regulated—and the airspace is likely more extensive than the preserve’s boundaries. Someone needs to check an aviation map! #3. I could be wrong, but I think National Forests and the Forest Service are under the jurisdiction of the Department of Agriculture.

My theory about the fire extinguishers is that Trevor Jacob always has them strapped to his legs, on or off an aircraft. The reason for this is that he is such a lightweight, he needs something to keep him from floating away.

@V100-e5q He had a single sponsor. Indeed, this video was the first video of that sponsorship. That sponsor has already severed their relationship from him, and he had to repost the video removing his mention of the product. 😄 So no, I don’t think Go Pro would touch Trevor with a 10’ selfie stick.

@twillison8824 It’s not confirmed. All that is known is 1) that a helicopter flew to the area of the crash, and 2) the company is a government contractor operating out of Paso Robles. Coincidentally, the FAA field office (that might be conducting the investigation) is located in Paso Robles. What this means is A) we don’t know for sure if the wreckage has been moved, B) if it was moved, we don’t know by whom. However, it would be logical to assume a government contractor that has performed helicopter operations for the government (including operating on federal lands) would know a thing or two about receiving authorization to remove a crashed aircraft in a National Forest, in close proximity to a wildlife refuge (for the endangered California Condor, no less). Safer speculation is that it was the FAA that had the plane moved, if it was moved at all.

@mouser485 I’ve seen that video, and there’s an awful lot of speculation based on very little evidence. The more plausible explanation is that it was the FAA that contracted the helicopter. The helicopter company is a federal contractor out of Paso Robles. The FAA’s district field office (FSDO) is in Paso Robles. The helicopter company has performed work on protected federal lands in the past and are certainly aware of permitting and authorizations necessary to conduct such work as removing a crashed aircraft from a National Forest. Don’t get me wrong. I think it would be awesome if Trevor Jacob made the mistake of interfering with a federal investigation. That would constitute a much more serious crime. But until we learn more (we don’t even know if the crashed plane has indeed been moved), don’t pin your hopes on such speculation.
