It occurred to me that Russian forces might be exhausted and weakest in the area around Bakhmut, and that could be a very strategic line of attack to cut the Russian occupation in half.

I’m not sure what you’re saying. If you mean that Ukraine doesn’t have to fight over every scrap, but can force Russia to leave ALL of Ukraine by taking strategic targets, I agree. However, it is a mistake to let the Russians keep any Ukrainian land.

Soviets had home field advantage. In the current situation, the Russians don’t. Nor does the Russian army have the logistics, a sufficient number of trained soldiers, or morale on their side.

@abrahamdozer6273 I’m sorry, I don’t think I made myself clear. I’m not saying to retake Bakhmut. I’m saying draw a line from Bakhmut to Rostov-on-Don. I don’t think it’s probable, I’m just saying it’s possible. And one thing our dear friend Prigozhin showed the world is that there aren’t many Russian Forces between Bakhmut and Rostov. Or between Rostov and Moscow. 😉
