  1. The issue was the 1) NATO avionics/communications suite and 2) cockpit layout. It took time to remove the NATO kit and replace it with kit that can smoothly integrate into the Ukrainian Airforce. Cockpit layout is surprisingly important—pilots train many hours on a plane to hardwire the locations of dials, gauges, readouts, and various controls. A pilot might be able to fly an unfamiliar layout, but until they’ve mastered a new layout they are at reduced combat effectiveness. Remember, fractions of a second count. You don’t want to be scanning for your altimeter when a missile has you on lock. So Poland either had to reconfigure the cockpit to resemble a Ukrainian MiG-29 or they had to train Ukrainian pilots on their configuration. I do not know which solution Poland used. If I am correct, the Polish Migs can be put into immediate use once they arrive in Ukraine.
