Interesting. I assumed they were lenses and not reflectors. Some of them looked like fresnel lens, as used on many studio lights for focusing a beam (and changing from flood to spot, depending on distance of source to lens). Thanks for clearing up the terminology.

Problem is fan noise. You’d need to position the projector far away from the screen (and viewers).

Can I have the shipping crate when you’re done with it?

David Null Yeah, I was going to say Xenon. Not super common in movie lights, but often available at rental houses. When they are used for cinema, they’re mounted on a cherry picker (a snorkel type crane with a platform for workers) or a regular crane and operated remotely. I’ve seen them use to mimic a helicopters searchlight (since it’s more expensive to rent a helicopter) or a downward light from a UFO (MUCH more expensive to rent, I’m told).

DENIS Forrest A marine battery might be better (or a bank of 6), but I have to wonder how long they can sustain even voltage. I’m also thinking that for the purposes of the experiment, the cooling system should have a separate power supply.

Shagrof That depends on your geographical location. In the U.S., your ordinary three prong socket supplies single phase 110-120 volts, and are rated for 15 amps. [If you have greater power requirements, you can add a 240 volt circuit (using two hot legs to complete the circuit, rather then 1 hot and 1 neutral) If this sounds to technical, it’s better to avoid fooling around because these voltages are deadly.] Other countries use different voltages, and their outlet connections are rated differently according to their local electrical codes.

Hi! Thank you for this great video. Did you manage to measure the light output before the power supply broke? I’m trying to imagine how you’d use this in a practical application. Maybe mounted on a crane? :D
