  4. I lived out in the Mexican countryside for a year and in a Mexican town for the past dozen years. Dogs are definitely used as security systems in both places. In town people have roof dogs to discourage thieves from entering a house from the rooftop patio. In the countryside, they tie the dogs up around a perimeter (and also use cactus as barriers). One thing I’ve noticed is dogs in Mexico learn early about the thrown stone. Simply bending down and pretending to pick up a stone can be sufficient to ward off an aggressive dog.

  6. There are many such channels. And quite a few crap ones, too. Keep searching for the topics that interest you. The ones that I’d avoid off the bat are ones that make pseudoscientific claims, that revile “orthodox” academia, or that engage in conspiracy theory thinking. That said, experts can have different opinions about various topics, so that alone wouldn’t cause me to reject a channel.

The fact is that this research has been going on for 30-40 years, was written about by Charles Mann for the non specialist audience in 2002 (magazine article) and in 2004 (nonfiction book entitled 1491). Hancock doesn’t own this, he didn’t do any of the work, and he’s not the first to write about it for a general audience. You think that recent discoveries are “proving Hancock right”, don’t you? All Hancock has done is spice up ongoing research with his conspiratorial bullshit.

  10. Perhaps “by chance” is a better term than by accident. I enjoy this form of speculation. It’s both evidence and imagination based. Stephan is pretty clear that he is engaging in speculation, but it’s not baseless. My speculation is that there was something in the psychology/sociology of each species that increased the probability of social integration and personal relations between dogs and man.

  16. This research into possible Amazon River Basin civilizations has been going on for 30 or 40 years. They’ve been doing LIDAR studies for quite a while. The thing is, the ARB is frikin huge and much of it is very remote, so it took some time to find these great mounds.

But how likely is it to have occurred with access to river silt? A second factor would limit possible soil depletion: the predominant agriculture in the Americas involved planting corn, squash, and beans together as companion crops on mounds. (1 cornstalk per mound, bean plants using the corn as a trellis, and squash plants keeping you soil from drying out. The bean plants would fix nitrogen in the soil.) Look up “three sisters” or “tres hermanas” in Wikipedia for a brief overview of this agricultural technique.

  26. I didn’t think there was evidence that vast tracts of land were cleared for agriculture. I was under the impression that the peoples of the Amazon rainforest practiced a sophisticated arboriculture that went undetected initially, because explorers and archaeologists were searching for evidence of agriculture. A settlement of tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands people would still cultivate lands around their settlement for corn, beans, and squash, but it might be less than you think if their main food production was fruits and nuts (not to mention abundant fish). The idea that a large part of the Amazon was given over to agriculture is not supported by the evidence.

There’s an anthropological joke (funny because it’s true), that whenever an anthropologist can’t explain an object or its use, they say, “probably used in ritual”. (Future anthropologists, excavating a flat panel TV, will say, “probably used in ritual”—and they won’t be wrong.) Keeping in mind that even the most well reasoned speculative explanation can be miles off the mark, it is vastly entertaining to imagine life in prehistoric societies.

Imagine a civilization losing three quarters of its people in a very short time.   43. The Maya calendar is a multi cycle calendar. That is, the calendar tracks multiple counting cycles simultaneously. One of the cycles is based on the solar year. It might also interest you that the Mayan counting system was base 20 (ours is 10).

  49. Mann was reporting on new archaeological research in the Amazon and in the Peruvian lowlands in his book 1491. I really enjoyed reading about the evidence of sophisticated aquaculture and arboriculture in these areas, which countered the European bias of agriculture being a foundational requirement for civilization. (And he also talks about arboriculture in the NE corner of North America.) And he does indeed cover how the probable ravages of old world diseases left various groups in “savage” existence that European explorers understood as their natural state. (Although maybe he goes into that in his sequel work, 1493? It’s probably been 20 years since I read those two volumes.) Anyway, this video is a nice update on the research from 20-30 years ago about which Mann was writing.
