  1. Right on. I’m a 2A supporter, but not a 2A absolutist. And one thing that has confounded me about my former party is that as often as they say, “It’s not a gun issue, it’s a mental health issue,” they’re almost never willing to fund mental health. I’m no socialist, but supporting community mental health is money well spent, not another government give away. So I am very interested in a candidate who supports sensible gun safety law and also helping our communities look after their own. If that’s not conservative, I guess I’m no longer a conservative.

  2. This is far from the most awful thing Trump has done. Perhaps it’s the most bizarre thing he’s done. I can’t say that I suspected he’d do this, but my reaction was “of course he is”.

  4. I joined a stream of some lefty guy who was bitterly disappointed by Kamala’s pick. One of the things that he felt should have disqualified Walz (or at least given pause) was that Walz had a DUI back in 1995. The midwesterners in the chat found this hilarious. They found a 30 year old DUI to be almost a prerequisite for political office. It was one more thing about Walz that made him “one of the guys”. I will say this about Shapiro. He swallowed his disappointment and went right into campaigning for Harris/Walz without hesitation.

  5. This might sound weird to say about a master sergeant, but he brings a softness to the ticket. He’s maybe had his own hard edges worn down a bit. He’s like a boot that’s already been broken in.

  6. Elon Musk: an idiot savant that has had some outstanding luck that made him incredibly wealthy rather than just “ordinarily wealthy”. Aside from being lucky, his other main talent seems to be “having big ideas and finding the right people to execute those ideas.” He is lauded for being an engineering genius, but does little if any engineering. His two biggest liabilities are some form of Asperger’s syndrome or autism (on the spectrum, as they say), and believing the hype about himself without self-awareness. He probably does think he can save Twitter, as he believes that every problem can be solved with engineering and that he’s the man for it because he’s the world’s greatest engineering genius. Twitter: It’s never turned a profit. In 2021 it lost $221 Million (an improvement over the nearly $4 Billion it lost over the preceding three years). Elon Musk might hasten Twitter’s demise, but if it has not managed a profit in its 16 years of operation, its demise seems inevitable. If Twitter serves an important public utility, it should probably be owned and operated by a non-profit NGO. Maybe Jack Sparrow, sorry, I mean Jack Dorsey, should round up some benevolent billionaires and recreate Twitter as a non-profit.

So yes, democratic policies are superior to republican policies. But I would not call them superior, as in “best possible”. That said, I think both Harris and Walz are not doctrinaire liberals. They know how to work with others and work out compromises.

  19. Nah. This is what makes them happy. Whether or not the “elites” are exploiting this doesn’t address the problem that happiness for some is hatred and violence and hurting others. They are happiest when they’re at their cruelest. There might be intersections between racism and capitalism, but socialism does not magically cure racial and religious hatred.

Nor does it mean the positive and charming eccentricity of the neighbor down the block with a waxed handlebar mustache who keeps a pet crow. The weird we are associating with maga, Trump, and Vance is the uncanny feeling you’d have upon learning that one of your coworkers was John Wayne Gacy.
