I’ve never seen that show, but it’s kind of weird to me that “taking the fifth” has become normalized. Maybe it’s the zeitgeist, maybe it’s having just watched taped depositions of Trump cronies like Michael Flynn invoking their Fifth Amendment rights not to self-incriminate when asked the most basic questions, like about the peaceful transition of power between presidents. (I found it bizarre that he refused to answer such a no-brained question that boils down to, “do you believe in the basic principles of America”.) But politics aside, it seems bizarre to me that “taking the fifth”, with all its criminal implications, has become a stand in for “none of your business”. What does this mean? On one hand, it suggests that we have a right to delve into the personal matters of other people, that they have no right to privacy. That’s troubling. More troubling is that criminality has become normalized as a behavior, that it’s a private matter and OK as long as the criminal isn’t caught. Or maybe I’m reading too much into this.

It’s an opinion question and that was Ray Liotta’s opinion. I’d be curious about his reasons for saying Eastwood is overrated, which maybe he discussed. But I can already guess at a possible reason. Eastwood doesn’t have much range. He plays and replays the same personality—and Eastwood does have a charismatic personality to be sure. No one is ever going to say that Clint Eastwood disappears into a role. So I get why someone would say he is overrated as an actor. I happen to love The Unforgiven. The role suits Eastwood perfectly and vice versa. But the talent on display is really Eastwood’s directing (for which he has received deserved accolades). Eastwood’s acting in the movie isn’t terrible, but it’s not truly great, either. It does what it’s supposed to do, which is move the story forward and keep the audience engaged. It’s Eastwood’s charisma that has led to his fame, not his acting. In a way he’s not that much different than John Wayne, who refused roles that wouldn’t fit his brand.
