  1. I always say that my #1 defense is my running shoes. However, that’s not completely true. I rely on my eyes and try to stay aware of the situation and the people around me. When I walk, I’m scanning a block or two ahead with frequent glances behind me. I try to be a little extra vigilant as I pass transitional spaces, such as cross streets, store entrances, alleyways, etc.
