@tashathayer6427 A foreign agent in this context isn’t a spy. It’s a lobbyist for a foreign country. They’re required by law to register as a foreign agent for country X (or multiple countries if they represent more than one). It appears that this woman didn’t register and attempted to conceal that Russia was her employer. She isn’t being charged with spying, she’s being charged with “lobbying without a license”.

She wasn’t a spy. To lobby for a foreign country, you have to register as a foreign agent. It’s a crime not to register, and a bigger crime to attempt to hide it. If she had registered as a foreign agent, she could have worked without breaking the law.

She wasn’t a spy. She was a lobbyist for a foreign country. Such lobbyists must register as foreign agents, and they’re free to do their lobbying. This woman failed to register and seems to have tried to hide her job working for Russia. Her citizenship status has nothing to do with the crime—Americans get busted for this all the time.

@hifinsword that’s right. And she’s not being charged for espionage. A foreign agent is basically a lobbyist for a foreign country. You are required by law to register as a foreign agent for country X (or even multiple countries). It appears that this woman tried to conceal who was paying her for the work she was doing. Her citizenship has nothing to do with the case—Americans without dual citizenship get caught for acting as unregistered foreign lobbyists all the time. Calling her a spy is like calling your insurance agent am insurance spy.

Do you understand that she isn’t being charged for espionage. She’s being charged with a crime that is basically “lobbying without a license”. If you lobby on behalf of a foreign country and are paid by that country, you’re considered a foreign agent. You’re required to register with the State Department (or DOJ, or maybe both, I’m not totally sure). The woman is being charged with not registering.

This case isn’t about a spy. It’s about a lobbyist. A lobbyist for a foreign country is called a foreign agent and must register with the State Department to do lobbying for a foreign country. This woman didn’t register, but worse, it appears she tried to conceal that she was working for Russia.
