  1. The rural villages were given kulak quotas. So in a village of 200 families, the authorities required the village to denounce and give up 20 kulaks. Maybe only 18 could be counted as slightly more prosperous (owning 2 cows instead of one), so it became a matter of personal survival to denounce two more people regardless of their economic status. This sounds crazy and arbitrary unless one considers the true purpose: to impose a state of terror on the Russian people. Collectivism was only the cover purpose, at best a secondary goal, to Stalin and the Party maintaining authoritarian control. (I maintain that, despite their Marxist ideology, the USSR was essentially run by a gang of criminals, before and after Stalin.)

  2. That’s not accurate. Seventeen days after the initial German invasion, while Poland’s armed forces were busy fighting the Germans, the USSR occupied Poland as per previous arrangement with Nazi Germany. Hitler and Stalin divided up Poland, and the USSR continued to provide Nazi Germany with steel, oil, strategic minerals, and other resources until Hitler’s operation Barbarossa took Stalin by surprise. Basically, the Soviets were supporting Hitler’s war machine until that war machine was turned on them.
