  1. Ma Cro There were two likely causes for the ridiculous quality control. 1. The soviet purge of engineers in the 1930s (many were shot and many more sent to perish in Siberian slave labor camps). 2. Corruption, where high ranking party members skimmed materials (to be sold on the black market) and substituted inferior materials or fake materials. Is it safe to speculate that the state organs got more serious about the corruption sometime in 1942? I don’t want to guess, but I bet one could learn a lot by examining Minister of Internal Affairs Lavrentiy Beria’s lists.
