  1. Wow! I hadn’t seen this vid. Thank you, B, for sharing your personal experiences. My take away is this: despite the other negatives, national service forges social bonds that help hold a democratic society together. It can also help you get your shit squared away (become a responsible adult). I’m writing from the perspective of a U.S. expat in 2020, watching my society get ripped apart by a fascist political party, against a backdrop of the pandemic and environmental disasters. The bonds that held our democracy together, that united us as a people, are looking increasingly fragile.
