@nonadeplume1145 The phrase of which you’re thinking is “form over function”, not fashion over form. It’s a fairly common phrase that you might have misheard. Function would mean the structure’s practical function as a house (or whatever its purpose). Form would mean the aesthetics. FLW’s work has been influential within the world of architecture, but it wasn’t “fashionable” by any definition. You can readily apply the word to the California bungalow, but not one of Wright’s structures. As far as the building materials being “esoteric” as the other commenter suggested, FLW used concrete. He used a lot of oak. These aren’t rare or little known or obscure materials. I think the commenter doesn’t know the definition of the word. Back to form over function: Some of FLW’s structures are notorious for issues with flooding, as was the case with Hollyhock. Assuming that’s what you meant, I am in full agreement.
