My take away about the issues the paper was trying to address was not so much about career outcomes, but community health outcomes. Surely there is more to be done to improve those outcomes, whether we are talking about race, ethnicity, or economic class, or other demographic categories. For example, one of the biggest “healthcare deserts” is in rural white areas among low income folks. Measures to improve underserved ethnic communities should also help these underserved communities. The issues the paper is purportedly addressing are real, but I don’t believe the proposed solutions are realistic. (I haven’t read the paper, so I’m going on what is being reported here.) But just because the paper is wrong on that count doesn’t mean it shouldn’t have been published if it fosters discussion and debate.

It would backfire if it were implemented, but it won’t be. This is an extreme fringe addressing real problems with extremist solutions. The actual dividing lines on the issues is whether one thinks they exist or not, or whether they’re important enough to be solved. If you acknowledge that they exist and need to be addressed, you can debate which are the best solutions and you can discard harebrained schemes like segregated med schools.
